The Japanese had discovered Yafinia in the year 1393 and introduced the Kanji writing system to the natives. The Japanese had also attempted to introduce the Kana alphabets, however they were rejected by the Yafinians. The Yafinians grew an affinity for Japanese culture, picking up their culinary habits, bowing behaviour, and weapons to better fight off raiders. Yari was crucial to Yafinian farmers defending their families against occasional rebellions against local lords. Yafinia was first mentioned in writing in 1397 in a haiku by an unknown author, praising Yafinia for its fair soil and fertile women.
The Ming Dynasty of China independently discovoured Yafinia in 1405 and introduced the Chinese version of the character's pronunciation. The king of Yafinia of the Lun Dynasty offered China one of his daughters, and in exchange received a Chinese embassy. This is the oldest structure in Yafinia today. Japanese contact with Yafinia ceased during the 1500's as wars in Japan distracted the nation from foreign affairs. As a result Yafinia grew increasingly similar to China, and one Chinese official wrote in his diary,
"Jijiefeng (Yafinia) is much like China, except it's [really] inconvenient travel." Although Yafinia shared many qualities with China, many things were still different. Yafinian architecture more closely resembled Japan's, and many Chinese and Japanese pronunciations were butchered to the point Yafinian became a separate language. Although Yafinia enjoyed good relations with the Chinese, every one of the Emperor's proposals to turn Yafinia into a vassal or protectorate has been declined. Even the royal wedding which began Sino-Yafinian relations was exploited to bring Yafinia into the Chinese realm, however when the princess learned of her husband's death she had fled China and to this day is unaccounted for.
Portuguese ships were surveying East Asia in the 1500's and discovoured Yafinia in the year 1520, searching for Japan. The Portuguese were given a small fishing village called Yuhar to use as a trade port in exchange for European guns. The King ordered the Yafinian noblemen (who were the military, as Yafinia had few military conflicts) to practice in arms immediately, however there was backlash to the westernisation. A pretender by the name of Yua announced himself Emperor of Yafinia in 1525, and swayed many powerful people with his promises of keeping Yafinia true to the traditions. King Lun ordered Yua dead, and as a result a five year civil war broke out across the island. However, the Loyalists were armed with firearms, while the Yua Reactionaries were armed with traditional swords and pikes, and were defeated.
Upon crushing the Yua Rebellion in 1530 the Lun Dynasty had rewritten the Mandate of Heaven, claiming that Yafinian kings were only legitimate if they were direct family of the current King, and the only legitimate dynasty is Lun. He had outlawed all other legitimacy, and declared it illegal to criticise the government. This made life in Yafinia rather irritating, but no uprisings would occur for centuries. This period of time would come to be known as the Yafinian Dark Age.
